2011 euroserie supertwin topgas championship.

Season's opener: Drag days, Hoskovice, Cz.

group

A quarter mile dragrace on the concrete airstrip, organised by the Knebl family and Barons Mc.

Just like other years we felt very welcome and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in the Czech republic.

Mr Vladimir Hutla had set up his timing equipment, and the "Dragster Ultra Fan" speaker kept the spectators wel informed.

Otto Kneble dominated the "Competion Bragbike" class with his new Kawasaki "funny bike" and also coached the new owner of his old "Green Cameleon".

otto

It was great to see him beat his friend and rival Michael Ponca on the "Czech airforce" Yamaha, who also found a new rider for his old bike. Michael and Otto travelled all over Europe for many years to compete in UEM sanctioned races, so you could call them embassabors of the Czech drag bike scene. The final duel was a classic race.

Yvona Kneblova must have a direct lint to the weather gods, because the sun always seems to shine while she organises a race, and this year was no exeption.

Eight team of our class showed up, with only seven race ready bikes.

Marc Vandenboer from Belgium is still building his new bike, but had it with him to show it to the race fans and the world.

boer new bike

He'll try to be back in four weeks to put it on the track for the very first time.

Also from Belgium is Criss van Nimmen, with his big 180 ci. Harley-Davidson drag bike called "Mack Attack" created by our former class member and good friend Marc Klessens.

Criss had some problems with the engine the last few years, but invested big in new internals last winter, and now the bike is faster then ever before resulting in a new personal best. Van Nimmen did not attend the winter meeting but plans to race a full season with the class. Criss was rewarded for his effort, he made it into the finals.

van nimmen

Bernd Niessen from Germany fitted a supercharger to his yellow alu-Buell last year. Over the winter he changed the belt and pulleys that run it. But it looks like he has not found a belt strong enough to deal with the brute force of the V-twin engine.

On sunday his mechanic set up the clutch really soft to spare it, but that did not help to win the first round, Van Nimmen was quicker and sent Niessen home in the quarter finals.

Also from Germany is team "Sideburns". Peter Niklas was the rider the last two years, but the team did a "reshuffle", chief mechanic Christian Bruhl is now in the sadle of the turbo charged Honda SP1, with Peter assisting him at the startline.

christian

Christian must be very motivated to do at least as good as Niklas did, as he lost 28 kilo's of weight last winter to get a better horsepower/weight ratio. The "Sideburns" had tested the motor a week before, and suffered damage to the top end. They were able to repair the engine , and Christian managed to qualify during his first attempt. The Honda was broken again after that, so Christian spend the rest of the weekend wiping the front wheel of Peter Niklas' Ducati, competing in the "Moditwin" class.

peter

A regular visitor of Hoskovice is Frank Heitmann. He is a former champion in our class and hosts the meetings. He's a talented rider, but his bike did not cooperate this weekend.

frank

Frank qualified last, and could not even show up for the quarter finals against Herman Jolink. Too bad, would have loved to see that race, both guys can be hotheads when they meet each other at the startline. I'm sure they battle it out next time. Frank had a beer with his friends on saturday evening and went to the riders presentation on sunday at noon to greet the crowd before going back home to Minden, Germany.

Expectations were high at the Czech team of Milan Koláčný. After racing an Aprillia and Harley V-rod turbo in "moditwin" class, they now own the ex-Roman Sixta supercharged Honda SP1.

Milan

The bike is able to produce low 8's an Milan already did that at Kunmadaras, a week before. Milan qualified third, and did the highest top speed of all: 258 kmh, so the first 25 point high speed bonus of this year go to Milan and the Arachnids. We could have seen the Honda's meet in the quarter finals, but with Bruhl broken, Milan got to ride alone. He did not take it easy, lane choise in the semi finals, where he was to meet Herman Jolink, was at stake, and he managed to grab it!

All the way from the west coast of Holland came team "Van Schie".

schie

Mechanic Jaap had fitted different cams in the ex-Job Heezen blown Harley-Davidson last winter. It seemed to pay off, Harry's wife Annette jumped three feet high when she saw the digits come on the display: 7.979!!! Great performance, a new personal best, but also a compliment to the track, as conditions were perfect on saturday. Looks like there is more in it, with a 5.0 at half track.

Jaap had a leak in the air resovoir to repair, so they had to skip one round. Then came out again to try and back it up. 8.11 sec and this was the result:

schiekopFoto

I heard them talk about repairing it, but it looks pretty FUBAR to me. So the top qualifier was out on sunday. But the team was not out of the race completely, they could now all concentrate on Harry's son Gijs who competed in "teenage dragster" class.

gijs

Hoskovice is the favorite track of Herman Jolink from the Netherlands.

Jolink

He raced there twice last year and won both times. He arrived early on the strip, so he could use the free training session after five on friday afternoon. On saturday he opened with an 8.5, then 8.4, then 8.38. He managed to stay ahead of Milan in the qualifications and never was faster in Hoskovice then on saturday fourth round with 8.35. With only four racers left on sunday, Herman got to ride alone first round. His semi final round against Milan promissed to be a thriller. Both bikes are very loud, and both riders did great burnouts. Herman was first in pre-stage, and Milan first to light the stage lamp. Herman waited for seven seconds, before activating the stage light in his lane, and off they went.

milan

Herman overrevved and fishtailed down the track. Milan's bike stopped shortly after launch. Turned out he accidentally switched off the fuel. "My mistake", Milan explained. An expensive one, Milan could be in the lead of the championship if he had sent Jolink home.

flow

The finals was a beauty. And a loud one as well. Herman likes his Ducati engine to be hot so he starts it up early. Criss van Nimmen's bike rus 3000 revs at idle to make the oil pump work proprely so he wants to start as late as possible to not overheat the aircooled V-twin. Herman makes a rolling burnout, so takes a little more time to stage. Criss waited starting up his engine till Herman started to burn. Both riders met at the startline at the same monent and left side by side.

finale

finals

At half track Herman took the lead and stayed ahead.

podium

So just like last year Jolink won ste first race and leads the championship. Milan Kolachny comes second, then Van Schie, closely followed by van Nimmen. Complete results can be found here.

Many thanks to all crew,, we had a great time!

We're back in Hoskovice in a few weeks, so some time to repair and prepair. I wrote host of this report in a hotel in Prague as were forced to stay a bit longer. Traveling home with team Jolink, we lost a rear wheel of the van while doing 120 kmh. on highway 55, it became uncontrolable and after a lot of s;ippimg sliding it fell on it's side and started to spin. It seemed to last forever before we came to a stop, but luckily we didn't hit anything and all three of us got out of the wreck alive and well. After unpacking the van on monday, we saw that the Ducati drag bike survived as well.

See you all at the next race!
