Round four in the Euroserie: Drachten Internationals, July 2011.

Weather was bad, all week before the race, and the field on the south side of the track had already turned into a swamp before the first teams arrived. But the sun came out on friday, and two rounds of qualifications were held that day.

Christian Bruhn had his camper parked on a dwelling mound behind race controle where he worked on his experimental turbocharged Honda.

Bruhn

He made two passes, found some problems, didn't want to break anything, and was spectator on sunday. Much to his own supprise he didn't qualify last.

Team Jolink arrived late to the track and got stuck in the mud before finding a place to camp. Herman did not qualify, but did an 8.6 demo run on friday instead.

Criss van Nimmen suffered damage to his cylinders during his first attempt, and qualified number six.

Nimmen

All hands on deck for team Belgium.

piston

Criss was able to rebuild the engine and Marc Vanden Boer helped Van Nimmen to overhaul the gearbox. On saturday morning the bike was ready in time for round three, and Criss moved up to place #4.

Boer, Caspari

Marc Vanden Boer came without his bike to Drachten, the test in Bechyne, Cz, showed the pistons did not have enough clearance, so still some more work to do. Just like last race, Bernd Niessen was absent, and Gerd Caspari was in the sadle of the Silver Surfer Alu Buell again, to test the new set-up with the blower. He joined the topgas class this time, to fill the field.

gerd caspari

Gerd's first shot was his best of the weekend, 8.6 sec with only 207 kmh end speed, so he was off throttle way before the finish line.

Lando

Lando Beugelsdijk started off with with an 8.6, only 0.02 sec quicker then Caspari. That made him second qualifier.

Lando

Lando did better the next round, 8.5, but stayed in the same position.

Milan Koláčný and his team found a dry spot to camp next to the finish line. And supprised everybody with an 8.30 second pass in round one.

Milan still needs a fresh rear tire badly, he told me, but still was able to do even better, later that day:

q2

A new personal best for him and the ex-Sixta Honda drag bike went quicker then it ever did.

Harry van Schie is the quickest this season, at the first race in Hoskovice he did a 7 second pass, but he did not do well this time in Drachten.

Harry van Schie

Shifting seemed to be the problem, as I saw Jaap check the mechanism.

q3

Qualifying number six, Harry was Milan's opponent on sunday. And the winner would have a bye-run in the semi finals. The call was given at noon, then lots of delays. While dark clouds came over, lots of time was wasted by demo runs of all the cars that were sponsored by MPM oil.

The teams waited patiently in the line-up till three hours had gone by, and Harry van Schie went to complain.

timing

The crew of eXplosion was tied up by a contract, and did the best they could to keep everything going, but "next time they plan a show like that, it's without our class" I heared some riders say.

Harry van Schie made a redlight, while he could have beaten Milan Koláčný.

milanharry

Lando Beugelsdijk had no opponent with Christian Bruhn out, but didn't take it easy. 8.5 seconds again.

Gerd Caspari reacted better the Criss van Nimmen, and never gave it away.

Watch the quarter finals here:

So Lando secured lane choice against Caspari in the semi's, and was the quickest of the surviving three riders.

After the quarter finals, a few more demo runs, then it started to rain again, and the rest of the race was cancelled.

Milan Koláčný scored most points, including the bonus for highest speed. But without all the wasted time and demo's, he could have had some more.

Gerd Caspari has the bike mechanically fit for Hockenheim. And gathered some valueble data with the logger to tune the engine further.

Lando beugelsdijk went home with a double personal best and the bike still in good shape. Now he is confident about the next race.

Herman Jolink still leads the championship, Milan Koláčný is closing in.Christian Bruhn is still third, followed by Harry van Schie, with Criss van Nimmen and Lando Beugelsdijk close behind.

Three more races to go. Next one:

12-14 august, the Nitrolypx at Hockenheim, Germany.
