Race #6: The Dutch Finals at Drachten airfield.
Racers racersclub eXplosion and promotor Automotoshow and a whole bunch of other people put in a huge efford to create ideal conditions for the racers.

The regular commentators Cees and Robin were both absent, but our German friend Benni Vos filled the chair and never shut his mouth while holding the microphone.

He shared his wide knowledge of the sport with the spectators in a bilingual comment in both the english and german language, and that gave extra an international feeling to the event.

For a third time in a row, the weather had a huge impact on the weekend. the south side of the track was an even bigger swamp then it was last time we were there, so the lay-out of the pits was different this time and Criss van Nimmen and Milan Kolacny got lucky and were given a place on the asphalt while the other bikers were camping on the field near the entrance of the small air strip.

Early friday morning a gas turbine machine was used to dry the track, and further preparations were made to the surface.
A few street classes ran, while the sun was out and the wind came from the east. Then the weather changed.
A dangerous looking cloud came rolling towards us and a warning for all teams to prepair for the worst was the announced on the speakers. Luckily no real damage, just a lot of rain.
Same story for saturday, but then it dried up again. So the Supertwin Topgas class could make two qualification passes in the afternoon.

Herman Jolink was quickest in round one, 8.52 seconds on his Ducati. Milan Kolacny's blown Honda (right lane, picture below) hessitated shortly after the launch: 9.4 sec and still 249 Kmh.
Criss van Nimmen came second after the first attempt: 9.12. Harry van Schie 9.56, and Christan Bruhn (left lane, picture below) closed the gate with 11.3.

Milan did what he had to do in round two, and passed Jolink.

Criss van Nimmen did did not improve,

and neither did Jolink or van Schie.

Christian Bruhn had a good Launch, but then a lot of back firing came from the turbo charged Honda.

A better time on the score board, but Bruhn stays in place #5.

Lando Beugelsdijk went back after trying to burn in round one, but did not solve his problems,

Lando did 16.4 in the second round.

Flow-charts were produced that evening, so everybody knew his opponent for the quarter finals on Sunday.
Milan was up against Lando in the quarter finals. Milan was glad with his top qualification, but wished he had a different opponent: "If Lando's bike is good, then he's dangerous for me", Milan told me.

Christian Bruhn found a leaking exhaust flange so the turbo was not fully charged. He walked around the pits to find a welder. He was helped out by Marc vanden Boer's son Jimmy, so Bruhn could prepaire for the race. Just like Lando, Christian could have an influence on the championship, as he was up against Jolink.
Shifting problems at Harry's bike, but it that was also repaired on saturday evening.

Christian Bruhn's team mat Peter Nilkas was racing with the Superstreet Twins. It turned out the wrong fuel mapping was loaded, as it didn't run well in the first round. His second attempt resulted in this huge wheely:

Looks like the NOS came on too soon.

All the Belgian bike teams were gathered at Marc Vanden Boers tent, who was not bothered much bij the rain on fryday. He came to Drachten to work on his fuel system and prepair for the event in Denmark next weekend. He is exploring the potential of the engine and blower by using Methanol, not allowed in our class. So he joined the Funny Bikes for the occasion. Top Methanol Funny car driver Danny Bellio was present for advice, and after making an extra injector and changing some "pills", it sounded good enough on saturday to make a first test pass.

The belt got wasted at 300 meters, Marc still did 8.6 seconds, good for third place in a class filled with four cylinder bikes.

Marc got into the line up after the first call for another attemp to upset the Funny Bike class, and even made it into the waterbox waiting for the sign to fire up the engine. But it was already raining at top end of the track so everybody rushed back to the pits to light the BBQ and grab a beer.

Sunday started sunny and clear, and again ther track crew had been working hard to prepair the dragstrip.
A memorial for John van Geytebeek, who died last year in a tragic nitromethane related accident, was held early sunday morning. All racers parked their cars and bikes on the strip, and after a minute of silence, everybody started the engine and revved it up for a while.

The track was sticky as hell that morning, shoes made squeaky noises on it, tennis shoes got almost glued to the track, the ideal situation for drag racing.
But dark clouds came soon, and nobody got a chance to run, at around 10 a.m. it came down heavily, but it stopped raining just after lunch.
The message came on the speakers that the crew would try one more time to dry and prepare the track, and again we heard mr. Kooyman wind up the turbine for a final attempt to make racing possible for the 200 teams.
And even when it started dripping again, he kept going for a while, but even the most optimistic people realized that there was no more chance for a race. While rolling up my tent I heard rider say: "it's like I've been to the movies and did not get to see a film".

We had six races so far, but only twice we saw a complete race and people on the podium. Herman Jolink managed to win them both and still leads the championship,
but Milan Kolacny came a bit closer last weekend. Both riders were present at all races, so still need to skip their worst results. We have a different point systen for the last race, because that is a sprint, not a dragrace. And it's going to be exciting! If Herman does not make it in the top twelve at Mosten, then Milan needs place #11 to pass him.
And if Jolink is with the first twelve on the list, then Kolacny needs to do two places better, to pass Jolink with only 10 points and become the 2011 champion of our class.

The three races in Drachten were also counting for the Open Championship of the Netherlands. Last year Milan won that in the Super Street Twin class, this year he is the new Supertwin Topgas champion of Holland! Congratulations to Milan Kolacny and his team!

I'm on my way to Denmark for the "Topgas Finals", see you all there!
