Season's opener: Drag Day Europe, Hoskovice, Czech republic.

Every year on the topgas calender, a friendly race on an airfield east of Prague by Kneble Drag Promotion with the help a few enthousiasts. They organise three Dragdays a year at that track, we picked the second one for our euroserie, and so they turned it into a weekend! It's a race organised by racers, as Otto Kneble and his wife Yvona also travel around Europe attending UEM races with a Puma topfuel bike.

Timing was as always in the hands of Mr Hutla, and never gave a problem. Rain was predicted for the Mlada Boleslav area, but Yvona is usually very lucky. On saturday a total of 4 qualification rounds were held and on sunday a last one, so lot's of track time for everybody to find the proper set-up.

Home boy and one of the favorites, Milan Kolacny had to sign off. During testing prior to the race, he broke the gearbox of his supercharged Honda twin while full blast in sixth gear. The rear wheel locked up, damaging the rear slick badly.
I understand the engine is repaired, or repaced by a spare, but Milan had not more rear tire and could not get one in time.

Chris van Nimmen was on the entry list, but also had to sign off. Details at the bottom of this report.

Instead of these guys, we saw the return of Simon Lewis on the quarter mile. A few years back he was riding the "Knightriders" Harley dragbike in Topgas and his last name was Hoffmann then. Now he's back with his own bike and team.

Simon, nicknamed "Homer", made two passes on saturday, (watch a short video here)

and another qualifation run on sunday (his best attempt, good for place #3) but was out for the race with a leaking head cover.

Peter Niklas is it the saddle of the turbocharged Honda called Blowjob1 this season, after his mate Christian Bruhn raced it last year. Christian entered the "Modified street twin" class with his nitrous assisted Ducati.

Team "Sideburns" had been testing at the "Super ralley" earlier this year and hopes to attend all races in the Euroserie Supertwin Topgas serie.

On the picture Peter seems worried in the line-up. No wonder, he damaged a cylinder head, then blew an exhaust gasket, and during the last attempt, a con rod decided to leave the engine. (Watch a short video clip of it here)

The team qualified #4 in 12.66 seconds, and was broken for the dragrace on sunday. Christian did much better, he qualified quickest in his class, won the quarter finals, then lost in the semi finals going off throttle too soon. Still he made the third place.

Bernd Niessen has a much better personal best then Niklas and Lewis, and should be competing for the #1 spot with Harry van Schie and Herman Jolink. But there are no guarantees in dragracing, and an electrical failure prevented the bike from running.

Bernd and his friend and mechanic Gert Caspari were not able to solve the problem, a dead Hestec engine controle unit,

so the supercharged alu-framed Harley-powered dragbike called "Silver Surfer" did not qualify!

Harry van Schie supprised everybody with a 7 seconds pass last year, so expectations were high for the "Full Throttle" team. Check-out pass was a 9.15 with a low end speed, and in round two it went worse. Round three was skipped for some wrenching and tuning, with no better results in round #4, still good for qualification spot #2 on saturday evening.
A lot more wrenching that evening and part of the night for Harry and grease monkey Jaap to get the supercharged ex-Job Heezen Harley in shape.

Sunday morning it looked as if Harry was going to grab the lead when he did a 1.25 seconds 60 foot, and was the quickest of all at the 1/8 mile mark, but he could not make decent speed at the second half of of the track to finish the job. So he stayed in place #2.

Our double champion Herman Jolink is probably the most frequent foreign visitor of Hoskovice, and defintely the most succesfull one.

The last few years he's usually on the highest step of the podium, and even won the "Competion bike" at dragday 3 in 2010 by beating Otto Knebble on his funny bike. Herman enjoys the relaxed atmosphere and the spectators enjoy the loud noise of the Ducati .

Helped by Henry Evers, the home made dragbike was prepaired according to his usual routine and after a long "rolling burnout" Herman carefully left the startline, then went full throttle while changing gears five times without help of a "shift minder". First pass: 8.56 seconds, not bad with four more attempts to go, and immidiately at the #1 spot. (watch a short video here)
After getting back to the pits, another routine of re-fueling, checking, recharging, adjusting, and a few cups of tea, and Jolink got into the groove. A much better 60 foot resulted in 8.35 at his second attempt. While the others were trying to deal with mechenical problems, Herman was enjoying himself on his bullet proof machine, and went 260 Kmh (with an 8.4), his best top speed of the weekend, during round three. Then another 8.52 before dinner. All looked bright for Jolink next morning, he did a 60-foot of 1.2 before lunch, so he was ready to take on Harry van Schie.

But dark clouds moved in, so no time to waste. First both riders had a solo run in the semi finals. Nice 8.41 for Herman, and his second best time this weekend, he never takes it easy in a bye-run.

They almost made it, but then the much hated wet stuff came falling down from the sky and that stopped racing. A prize giving ceremony was held, this time in the tent.

Harry did a 9.9 in the semi's so based on the results, Jolink was declaired winner, (read full results here) and is now in the lead in the pointlist for 25 months in a row. That's going to end soon. Herman is going to skip the next race as he is invited to the Word Ducati Weekend at the same date, where he will do exhibition demo's to promote our sport.

Both Herman Jolink and Harry van Schie were quicker then the winner of the "Competion bike" class Mr Jozef Cizek (8.66)

With only 60 points behind, Harry earns 100 points once his bike is technically approved to race at Drachten, so he will start the qualifications on friday as the virtual leader, and Lewis and Niklas also have a little chance to be on top after sunday. You all come over and see what happens.
