Race #4, Days of Thunder, Vandel Denmark, 3-4 august.

After the heavy rain in the Czech republic, all racers were optimistic when they saw the weather predictions for Denmark. A total of 10 topgas teams showed up, the biggest field so far this season, including our three Swedish friends and local hero Jesse James Bohn.

After an early riders meeting, a total of 7 qualification rounds were held on saturday, and two more on sunday morning, so plenty track time time to find a set-up for the eight-field quarter mile dragrace on sunday afternoon on a very well prepaired track.

Dutchman Herman Jolink, on top of the list since the first race of the season, travelled on his own to Denmark, and recuited an ad-hoc team of volunteers from other teams, to make it to the start line. His biggest opponent, Fredrick Schack from Denmark, was surrounded by family and friends...

...and even our old champion Jesper Thiel showed up for technical support.

Fredrick did not disappont anybody. He shot a 7.8 "straight from the trailer"...

...and did a new personal best of 7.73 seconds later that day, and went over 270 kmh, securing the "high-speed" points.

Jolink wasted two qualification attempts while he did not activate the tree in the proper manner. The clock was running long before he left the line. But he managed to do an 8.4 on saturday, good for third place on the list, and he skipped the two rounds on sunday to rest and be fit for the eliminations.

Frank Heitmann, highly motived this season, was very consistent in his races, and took the fourth place with an 8.49.

We did not see Stefan Andre from Sweden race last year, but now he's back with a new engine in his frame hoping to go faster.

He could not catch up with Fredrick, but managed to do an "eight flat" on saturday, like I knew he was capable of, and separated Jolink and Schack.

At the bottom half of the list, there was a hard battle going on, to avoid having to meet the the strongest opponent on sunday, and much to his supprise, it was Peter Niklas from Germany with his turbo-Honda to take the fifth place doing 9.0 seconds in the last round on saturday.

Chris van Nimmen from Antwerp, Belgium damaged his gearbox on saturday morning and spend the rest of the day wrenching and grinding, but was able to repair, and secured place # 6 on sunday morning.

He was not satisfied with his 9.12 as he burned his clutch, but he went straight as an arrow and shifted through all six gears.

Harry Van Schie enjoyed a holyday in Denmark with his wife and kids, while his mechanic Jaap Duin and his wife and kids had to race up north and back with the race bike, in a black van with a failing airconditioner.

Harry qualified #7 with a 9.17, they still try to gather data to find a better setup for the supercharged ex-Heezen Harley.

Harry's fifteen year old Gijs van Schie competed in Junior Drag bike, and managed to win the "best of three" shout-out on Sunday. And Jan Van Schie got a pitbike, and was practicing his skills on an empty runway and had the time of his life riding his pitbike all weekend.

Mats Larssen and Jan Malmberg from Sweden share a big touring car bus for their trips to the races.

Jan managed to become first alternate and shredded prime belts, And Mats didn't race at all. And before the eliminations on sunday had started, both bikes were already packed in the big orange bus.

So place #8 was open for Mr Bohn,

...and it was Denmark vs Denmark in the first round quarter finals.

It sounded as if Fredrick had shifting problems, as he lost a lot of speed at the second half of the track while Jessy James Bohn was picking up momentum and almost got him at the finish line.

Peter Niklas flooded his motor just before staging, then punched the bike and hit himself on the head, restart is not allowed after the burn-out.

So Frank Heitmann (picture above) advanced without opposition. Stefan Andre had no problem beating Harry van Schie, and Criss van Nimmen's motor went out after the burn-out, so also a free ride into the next round for Jolink, and the four best qualifiers into the semi finals.

Frank Heitmann had lane choice against Schack, but his 8.5 was just not quick enough for Fredrick, who did another seven.

Stefan Andre did 8.1, while Herman Jolink produced a low 8.4, his best performance of the weekend.

So once again Stefan Andre did Fredrick Schack a favour by preventing Jolink from picking up valuable points for the championship.

Stefan suffered wheelspin for the first 100 meters, and went off throttle. But Schack had problems too, and went off throttle after going sideways at the top end of the track.

Still he won with 9.1and was never in real danger.

This victory gave Fredrick Schackjust enough points to take the lead in the championship, with three more races still to come.

What else happened?

In the Funny bike class Sven Fagan (DK) came to the start with a new rolling chassis and a 13 inch rear tyre. The shake-down of it went well, a few tests and an 8.5 sec as best result, he found a few minor problems still to solve, but Sven was happy and sees potential in it.

Bad luck for ex-topgasser Marc vanden Boer. On saturday morning during his first attempt, a pushrod flew out after 100 meters, and Marc aborted his run. Inspection showed damaged the big end bearing of the new Puma crankshaft of his blown Harley. Then somebody in the team noticed a different smell between the cans of methanol. It turned out he had been racing with paint solvent as fuel, most likely the reason for the damage. An expensive mistake of his supplier! And at a bad moment in the season too.

Marc's son's Jim was kept busy repairing exhaust pipes for Van Nimmen and Niklas.

Peter Niklas' team mate Christian Bruhn competed in the SuperCompBike class, on his 999 Ducati and the help of nitrous oxide.

Next weekend he'll remove the bottle and will race with us.

So with three more races to go, we have a new leader in the pont list. Frank Heitmann is steady on place #3, and Niklas, van Schie and van Nimmen share place #4. .
