Welcome to the Euroserie Supertwin Top gas homepage.

Congratulations to our 2013 champion:

Frederik Kirkhoff Schack from Denmark.

welcome racefans

Race #1 in the 2014 Euroserie:

Season's opener, Drag day #34 at Hoskovice Airport in the Czech republic.

The weather prediction were not good, and it rained on friday when many racers arrived at the track. But Yvona Kneblova is always a bit lucky with the weather at her races, so most people were hopefull.
A strong cold wind was coming from the north, that's the left side of the track.
So for many riders it was a lot like sailing.
But at least it was dry, and four rounds of qualifications were held after the bikes had been scrutineerd by the technical inspector on saturday morning. Another round was planned for sunday morning, and everybody got to ride alone during the qualifications, mostly in the right lane.

Eight riders in the Supertwin top gas class showed up, from five different countries.
Defending champion Fred Schack from Denmark, former champion Frank Heitmann from Germany, and former champion Herman Jolink from Holland, who seems to own the podium at Hoskovice, were just three of the potential winners.

We will probably see quick passes by Olaf Menzi from Switserland real soon, as he bought Ulf Ögge's fast prostock G2 Buell and joined the STTG to practice. Below a picture with Olaf on the left side.

presentation

On the microphone you see Christian Bruhn, and in the middle is Peter Niklas. Both are racers of team Sideburns (Germany) who took turns at racing the Honda dragbike called "Blowjob One". Bruhn was very active in the Modified streettwin class last year, and even became the Czech champion in it. At our annual pre-season meeting he announced that both riders would race in the topgas class this year, with Peter Niklas on his own Ducati, and Bruhn back on the Honda. But they arrived at the with Christian's Duc in the trailer, as they they did not manage to get Peter's bike ready in time. Here's Peter smoking up the place during his first burnout while Christian watches him closely.

Niklasburn

All the way from Finland came Miia-Maria Vepsäläinen. Her crew had to do the long trip with the van and the ferry, while she flew to Prague and did some shopping there before going to the track.

miia

She has planned to do six of the seven races in the Euroserie this year, and will race at her home track's main event at Alastaro, the first weekend of june. She's not the first female rider to become a member of or class. I think that it was Annemarie Datzer from Germany, way back in the year 2001.

More riders from Denmark joined in this year. Later in the season we'll see Anders Jensen, here's Jesse "James" Bohn with his rider Lars "Birch" Sören Andersen on the bike they call "Orange Bitch", and the name of their team is BB-Racing.

Birchbohn

They skipped the first round of qualifications to work some more on the bike, the above picture is taken on sunday. They managed to pass the technical inspection and qualified for the race.

Fredrick Schack launced hard and straight during his first attempt...

schak

...but then it looked like a repetition of last year's first race, shifting problems prevented a quick time on the clock.

There is something wrong in the above picture! The reigning champion usually races with startnumber 501. It's a tradition.

Miia-Maria suffered mechanical problems and shut the throttle before the finish line.

Miia-maria

Then Olaf Menzi made a nice burnout and launched his bike for the first time, but went to the left side as soon as he left the shielded area near the startline and ended up in the left lane, then shut off the bike and went back into the pits.

Menzibuell

Olaf then found out that the bike was stuck in a gear, and he didn't come out for a second attempt any more. He was offered help to repair it by some people, that's the spirit and a golden rule in the pits. But Olaf politely refused. His regular mechanic and friend could not be with him this weekend, and they had agreed to wrench on the bike together, so he did open the gearbox and did not qualify. Hopefully he can repair it quickly and do some test runs under better conditions on friday at the next race Bechyne, and supprise us all during race day.

First in line for round one was Frank Heitmann and he launched in fine style and set the quickest sixty foot time of all, a very important aspect of the game.

Frank Heitmann

Veteran Herman Jolink went quickest of all after observing most of the STTG riders on their passes.

Jolink

While leaning his bike to stay in a straight line and straight up, he quickly shifted through the six-speed gearbox of his homemade dragbike with oversized Ducati engine. Herman usually starts off with a "high eight", then manages to get his best time down during the rounds and often saves his best shot for last. And the reliability of the bike and his behavour at the christmas tree make Jolink a dangerous opponent.

Then Christian Bruhn burned the clutch during the burnout. You can see crew chief Guido looking very worried on the picture below.

Bruhn

After round one, the euroserie had really started, with a list that looks like this:

q1

Frank Heitmann did not improve in the first 200 meters of his second run, but still set a better time and higher top speed in round two.

Frank Heitmaqnn

He stayed in second place but narrowed the gap to just 0.015 seconds.

Miia-Maria improved and moved up to place #3 but was also bothered by the strong side wind.

miiamaria

Herman Jolink improved in the first half of his run, but lost time and speed at the second half of the track.

Team Schack stayed in the pits, trying to solve the problem with the pneumatic gear shifter. Christian Bruhn had repaired his clutch in time, but found out that his battery was dead too late to make the call.

Peter Niklas went quicker, but lost a place in the ranking.

Peter Niklas

Lars Birch came out for his first attempt, but crossed the center line, so did not get a valid time.

Lars Birch

q2

Herman Jolink was first line to try for a third time, now using the right lane, but he went off throttle half way down the track after noticing a severe lack of grip and cruised to the end of the track.

A small piece came off Mia-Maria's bike during the burnout, and she saw ordered to shut off. Nothing serious, so she entered the line-up again.

Frank Heitmann tried the right lane, with a great result.

Heitmann

He took the lead in the qualifications with a quarter of a second advance over the #2.

Niklas didn't start in first gear, so a slow pass for him. Then Bruhn ran the Honda and everything looked good...

Bruhn

...for a few meters, then a huge cloud of smoke...

Bruhn

...and that was the last time we saw Christian wearing a helmet that weekend. Damage to a cylinder head beyond quick repair was his diagnose.

Mia-Maria went down in time and up in speed.

miia-maria

Still struggling with the wind but less threat from Peter Niklas after her pass

q3

The sun came out late saturday afternoon, and the wind calmed down, so conditions improved for round four.

Lars Birch made it to the finish line, so another rider qualified for the race.

Frederik Shack was watching the action and Rene came looking for him. At home it's Fred's dad, but at the track it's his mechanic. The bike was race ready to use the last round of the day to try it, but the rider was hard to find. The team then had to hurry to get into the start area in time.

Frank Heitmann did not improve his best time...

Frank H

...but set the best top speed so far, worth a 25 points bonus at the end of the weekend.

Then Jolink set things straight, produced an 8.5 and was back on top of the list again.

Niklas went quicker...

Niklas

.. and moved closer to Miia-Maria who did not show up for this round.

And Frederik closed the gate as it was getting dark, and moved up to place # 5, but his problems were far from over, as you can see on the list below.

q4

Most of the usual small party's in the pits were inside tents on saturday evening instead of outdoors, as the sky cleared up and it even started to freeze, shortly after midnight.

On Sunday morning the sun was out and everything looked bright. The concrete track started to warm up a bit, and one more round of qualifications was held before the eliminations would start.

Frank Heitmann tried hard in the left lane, and did his best 60-foot so far...

frank

...but while some dark clouds hang over him, he could not hold the gained advantage, further down the track.

Miia-Maria could not do better either...

Miiamaria

...and to make it worse, she was pushed down in the list by Fredrick Schack who launched with an amazing 60-foot time of 1.17 seconds.

Schack

Frederick adapted to the mechanical limitations during the run...

schack

...and this strategy helped a bit, he jumped to the third place on the list.

Then Lars Birch got his 13 seconds of fame...

Lars

...before Jolink blasted down the track in his sharpest time so far.

With only seven racers qualified, the quickest rider has no opponent in the quarter finals...

jolink

... so Herman was already with one foot in the semi's before the eliminations began.

petrr5

Peter Niklas went quicker then the day before, and moved closer towards Miia-Maria, his first opponent in the afternoon. But he was also passed by Schack so went down to place #5.

q5

A flow chart was produced based on this last and final list.

During the lunch break, the audience was entertained with stunt riders and by "Six seconds and 200 MPH Club" member Otto Knebble who fired up the Topfuel Puma dragbike, and let it run for a short while on nitromethane then opened the throttle very briefly a few times to demonstrate the power of the bike.

ottoknebl

Soon after that, Nitro-fumes filled the air and made many eyes water, then he shut it off.

Otto will compete in Finland in Juli, so Miia-Maria can see him race there, while we will have to wait till Hockenheim.,

Some riders were absent during the presentation of the racers, but most of them are on this picture, together with the officials:

group

During his bye-run, Herman tried to make a "carbon copy" of his previous pass with, just a sligtly slower result: 8.50 @ 245 Kmh.

Jolink

Miia-Maria had an extremely sharp reaction time of 0.02 sec.

petermiia

Peter was sharp too and did 0.06! passing the christmas tree, they were exactly equal, as you can see below:

petermiiamaria

They were side by side untill half way down the track, when Miia-Maria burned the clutch of her Harley while the Ducati kept accelerating for the full quarter mile. But there was only room for one Italian powered dragbike in the finals, as Herman Jolink would meet Peter in the semi finals.

Birch managed to go a whole second quicker then during the qualifications, so Lars and Jesse made some progress and learned a lot. They enjoyed it very much and will be back for more.

Frank Heitmann had no problem beating Lars Birch in the quarter finals...

HeitmannBirchQF

...but a serious problem with his ignition the next round kept him from further racing, as his engine died when he entered the waterbox. His opponent, Schack, had practice "manual assisted gear shifting" in the quarter finals and advanced automatically because of Bruhn being qualified but unable to race. So Schack benefitted from Frank's bad luck and got to ride alone again.

Schack

His sharp reaction and a 9.0 sec pass brought some tention to the finals, but Jolink had lane choice and was ready to play poker at the start lights after beating Peter Niklas without a problem (see the official results of race for more details).

Jolink gave his best performance in the finals and reacted first at the tree after being last to go in stage.

Jolinkschack

With a 0.2 seconds later reaction time and a shifting handicap, Frederik soon realised he was unable to catch Herman anymore and closed the trottle at about the 1/8th mile mark.

Another carbon copy of his first pass of the day, this time even sharper: 8.492 @ 246.3 kmh.

Posium sttg

There's an age difference of about 35 years between the number one and two on the above podium. In what other sport does that ever happen? For Niklas it's the very first time ever on the podium in the STTG class. A fresh championship's point list will be published soon, and guess who's in the lead?

Other highlights:

In the Competition Bike class, there were also eight riders present. Five national racers against the fast Funnybikes of Stefan Hagenstein (Germany) and Luc Raeymakers (Belgium), and on saturday only also by Marc Vanden Boer (Belgium), who came to test his methanol injected supercharged Harley, that he changed quite a bit last winter.

It looked as if Luc and Stefan would meet in the finals. Raeymakers was top qualifier, after doing 8.309 on sunday morning, but redlighted for the first time in his carreer in the quarter finals, so he didn't even get on the podium.

Luc

Still, he enjoyed the weekend and is happy with the motor after much hard work in the winter, and he'll raise the compression a bit, while following the instructions of the American former owner of the cilinder head, before going to Bechyne.

Haggie

Hagenstein kept going quicker and faster all weekend, so deserved the victory. Many congratulations to him.

Marc Vanden Boer did a check-out pass of 9.9, and was quickest in his class after the second round on Saturday with an 8.5.

Marc was pleased with the handling and the performance of the engine, and no more problems with the prime belt. During his last attemt on saturday, the bike was leaking fuel after the burnout, so he had to shut it off. The team solved the problem in a minute, so Marc went back in the line-up to try again. But he heard some strange noises. after he fired it up, so he shut it off quickly, fearing the big end of the motor was damaged. Inspection after getting home showed that this was not the case, so the engine goes back into the homemade frame, and he's ready for the next race.

boer

All of the above mentioned riders will also be present at the race in Bechyne in a few weeks, and Milan Kolacny (Cz) and Mats Larsson (Sweden) will also join in. It's the second race in the Czech Drag Serie too, so we'll see many familiar faces of the local racers too.

Annemarie, if you read this: Catwoman is still the quickest lady of the class, but it might not be for long.

Many thanks to Yvona, Mr Hutla, and all the others who helped to make it an event to remember. We're back in september for our Finals.
