Race #3: Summer Nationals, Santa Pod Raceway, UK.

Only five of our teams went over to the UK for the third race of the championship, but the field was filled by four national racers who were delighted that we came over. The weather predictions were not very good, but most riders were optimistic and in a good mood all weekend.

The Schack family from Denmark and team Herman Jolink from Holland arrived on friday, and so did Olaf Menzi from Switserland. Team "Sideburns" came in on saturday morning. Christan Bruhn had upgraded the turbo Honda and also finished Peter's Ducati just in time before they had left from Hamburg, Germany (above peter's first burnout). They hurried to set everything up and get the bikes inspected. But it turned out they had plenty of time, because it rained in the afternoon, so the first round of the qualification for the topgassers was delayed untill 6 P.M.

First two pairs were the locals, Joe Elliot on his Buell without wheelybar did a nice 9.2 (pictured above in the background, against Redneck racer Jo Brookes on a Suzuki).

Second pair two more Suzuki's: young Scott Collier on his dad's old dragbike, and veteran Les Harris on his Tilly in the left lane.

Then it was time for the Europeans to try out the unknown track. The last time that Herman Jolink had visited "the Pod" was thirtyfive years ago, while it was the first visit for the others.

Olaf Menzi went away before the green light came on, but made a valid qualification pass of 10.3 sec.

In the right lane, Schack's time was conservative, 8.1 sec, but with a new personal best speed of 270.23 Kmh.

Christian Bruhn's riding style didn't match his clutch setup, and Peter Niklas (left lane) left the startline in second gear.

Both bikes stopped before the 60-foot mark.

Herman Jolink left the startline with not enough revs and didn't open the throttle far enough to keep the engine running.

After a few meters of racing, he had to push the bike back to the pits.

Here's the poor result of the first round:

Sunday morning all looked bright, the sun was out, and based on the latest weather predictions, everybody was allowed one more round of qualification, then the eliminatians would be held. Racing started early, but dark clouds were already moving in as the topgassers went to the startline.

Olaf Menzi's bike puked some oil after starting it up, so he was not allowed to make a pass.

Frederik Schack had to lean against the wind and his run was far from straight, but he came close to a personal best time.

Herman Jolink did a nice 8.41 pass on his homemade dragbike that's powered by an oversized Ducati engine, riding in Frederik's trail.

Lots of hesitations by Peter Niklas' bike, but he managed to get to the end.

A wild ride for Christian Bruhn and his bike produced a cloud of smoke and oil as he aproached the finish line.

So the next class had to wait for about twenty minutes while the track crew cleaned up the mess.
Christian hopes it's only a head gasket, big chance the rest of the engine is fine. Bruhn got to place #3, and Les Harris improved his time in the right lane. Scott Collier could not better and the Suzuki of Brookes failed to start. Later that day, I saw the Redneck mechanics spying on Bruhn's turbobike.

Everybody hurried back to the pits to prepair for the eliminations.

A few car classes managed to do a first round , then it started to rain, much sooner then predicted. A few hours later, it had dried up and the track was prepaired again.
But only a few pair of cars were able to race, more rain came down soon, it got too late, that was the end of it.

In the Funnybike class Marc vanden Boer and Luc Raeymakers have an ongoing battle to be the "quickest Belgian on two wheels" as a local newspaper called Marc last winter. Luc went quicker since then, he did 8.2 in the beginning of the season on his Nitrous-assisted Kawasaki, but Marc and his supercharged Harley are on top again, with 8.15 seconds, set on saturday. Marc left hard on his second run, but broke the sprag just after this impressive lauch:

Place your betts: Who will be the first of them to enter the seven seconds zone?

Czech Jiri Lukes almost burned his private parts while on the ex-Otto Kneble "Green (now orange) Cameleon".

Quickest of that class was the Storm funnybike of Eastman and Hand.

It has two turbo's in line and a Puma top fuel bottom end. A front wing will be added soon. Rider Lorcan Parnell put 7.1 seconds on the score board. Unfortunately, on saturday night his leathers, boots and rare Simpson helmet were stolen from his car outside his home. More info on that and on the funnybike here...

Many thanks to the crew at Santa Pod, keep up the good work!

Defending champion Frederik Schack earned a few more points then Herman Jolink, so he's a little stronger in the lead in the championship.
Christian Bruhn moved to the fourth place, passing Frank Heitmann.
Jolink will be absent at the next race, as he will attend the World Ducati Week in Italy. So Schack could create a big gap at the next round, that is held in his own back yard.
But Olaf Menzi will get assistance at Malmö Raceway of former bike owner Ulf Ögge and his mechanic Ola, so the Swiss moulder could become a serious threat to the others soon.
Mats Larsson needs a miracle to get his gearbox repaired in time for the next race,
and Miia-Maria Vepsalainen also wrecked her gearbox after fitting new clutch parts, just before the main event at her home track in Finland. Here's a picture off her facebook page:

Good luck to all mechanics!

Four more exciting races to go, hope to see you all soon!
